Pneumonia by Jacob Gerlitz, NP What is Pneumonia? Pneumonia is an infection of the deepest part of the lungs where the cells exchange oxygen and waste material from the blood. The pathogen causing pneumonia – can be either a virus, bacteria or fungus. The pathogen – invades the lungs, causing inflammation that leads to cell death.
